Yesterday’s state meet was a very bittersweet ending for my season. After so many of ups and downs I wanted to end off the season with a good race. Unfortunately, I woke 3 days before the race with a sore throat. I tried to keep my head up but day by day it got worse. By the morning of the race I had trouble breathing on the warmup. The sickness combined with the low iron caused me to feel worse than any other race this season. In the first 400 I already felt my throat closing up. I went through the first mile in 5:06 and was pretty much last place. The rest of the race I was just wanted to finish and not give up. I saw the clock and my time was about a minute slower than I ran at Richard spring. After I crossed the line I was shaking and out of breath and it continued for the rest of the day. But the worse part was that I didn’t achieve the goal I had been working towards every single day for the last 6 months. I also felt like I had let the team down. But, I never expected that every single guy on the team would come up to me to tell me they were proud and didn’t care about how I raced. The support I saw yesterday reminded me how tightly knit this team is and how glad I am to be apart of it. I know everyone yesterday whether they were supporting or racing gave it their all. Although this wasn’t the season I had hoped for I am confident going into track that things will be different.

Had a great time at sectionals today and raced well. Leading up to the race I got more nervous than I usually do pre race. When I got over to the line I was getting more anxious. Although all of that stress went right away after the start. The first 400m of the race I could’ve executed a lot better. I almost tripped a couple times and lost a lot of ground by swinging out far. But I was able to make up ground after that. By the second mile I tried my best to move up spots and just stay with the pack I was in. With 800 to go I began to lose ground, I think I lost around 4-5 places. In that last 300 though, I thought back to how coach said every single place mattered and I was able to close hard. I think I caught around 5 people which made up for the lost places. I think this was a good race for me, I was focused the whole time and didn’t fall back many places. But I still have to work on my starts and finishes. I knew I had left a bit too much in the tank at the end. But it gives me confidence to know exactly what I can improve upon next Saturday. I can’t wait to race at state and I know every single person who raced today gave it their all. It was also great to see the entire team come out and give support.

Great race today at regionals. I went in knowing if I didn’t get top 6 I wouldn’t be able to continue my season into sectionals. But I didn’t feel nervous or anxious about it and I think I felt the most relaxed I’ve ever felt before a race. I got out slow similar to how I raced at conference and moved up little by little throughout the race. I wasn’t even thinking about whether I would make the sectionals lineup and instead just tried to race as best as I could. I ended up 17th overall and running a decent time of 16:32. I am super grateful to be apart of the sectionals line up and I am excited to compete next weekend. I think I will stick with the strategy of going out slower since it’s been working great for me. But I also want to try and pack up with Cole & Mark so we can work together to try and minimize that gap between our 4 and 5 runners.

I am very happy with how conference went yesterday. I changed up my race strategy and instead of going out hard I got out slow and moved up methodically throughout the race. I not only felt so much better during the race I also felt much more confident. Ended up getting 10th in the open and ran a solid time given the conditions. Over the course of season I got so discouraged after every meet. Moving back to the #18 guy after a whole summer of training in top group made me feel like all the work I had put in was for nothing. I am so thankful that coach and the team continued to believe in me. It got me into a better mindset before conference. Leading up to the race I was still recovering from sickness and knew that my iron levels were still very low. But once I got to the line I just let go of all of the negative thoughts and excuses and just tried to focus on the race.
